New to GW
Hi,
I played on a friends account a few years ago. Really liked it, but really didn't know anyone or have a clue what I was doing. Last night, I convinced my gf to give it a shot with me, and we both got free trials. She really likes it so far. Only played for like an hour. I'm going to be a Warrior and she will be a Mesmer, not really sure what our secondary professions will be. I plan on getting us the Trilogy that Gamestop is selling now for $30. 2 questions, do we both have to buy separate copies of the trilogy set in order to play? I assume yes. Also, where is a good place to meet ppl and make friends in GW. We'd like to eventually get into a fun, nice guild, but I have no idea. We don't really have any real-life friends who play, which was always the case whenever I'd play other games in the past. So, this is going to be a bit more difficult finding ppl I'm afraid. Anyways, I look forward to playing GW again. And I'll try to post here fairly often. |

Each account->One person.
No one else can play on it. If you want two persons to play, each must get their own account. As for people to play, well... there's always guild recruiters spamming their annoying ads, many welcome new players, so you could approach those until you get acquainted with more people. |

There's also a lot of guild recruiting threads here on Guru, or you are also welcome to post that you're looking for a guild in the appropriate forum. Let people know a little about you, maybe if you like PvE or PvP, or the kind of people you are or would like to hang out with.
There's a lot of people here who are also happy to answer questions. Welcome! |

Welcome to Guild Wars officially! As you can see, there are many new players just like yourselves who are delving into a new world and thus wondering where he could play with a group of people.
Many guilds often recruit for high-end speed clears, some recruit specifically for speed clears in elite areas only, or some only recruit for PvP. I'd suggest doing plenty of research around, possibly messaging or talking to officers (and members of that guild) of how it is around their guild. Some guilds either title-hunt together, celebrate events, or also doing group vanquishes, etc. It really depends on what you want to do in the end, and only you can decide whether you want to achieve. If you are looking forward to pushing for your hall of monuments and the rewards that come from it, then I would suggest a PvE guild that actively hunts for titles. Should you really love PvP, there are many guilds that recruit those types of players too. Good luck to you and your g/f and again welcome to the community! |

Thanks Thrudgelmir!
We aren't really sure what we want to do, so I guess we'll use the trial period to figure that out. Get used to the gameplay, etc. I just like the setup of GW moreso than WoW and even Warhammer (which I preferred over WoW but then all my friends quit). |

good job not choosing ranger or ele. Mesmer requires a better knowledge of the game (though skill tooltips and battlefield awareness help ... if something is attacking in melee chances are empathy is better on it than the mob wanding and throwing fireballs), so unless you're spamming Panic or something, it is not the easiest class to play.
The best way to find a guild is here on guru. People on guru tend to be more well-read and useful than those ingame who are just out to build a huge alliance of people that barely know anyone in them. http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/g...ment-f265.html for starters If you get the trilogy set you still need to buy Eye of the north (EoTN) because it's not in the set. Granted, it's about 6 dollars on Newegg and ~$8 on amazon. I highly recommend it due to the PVE-only skills and a bunch of skills that are more or less essential for optimal builds. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0t he%20north http://www.amazon.com/Guild-Wars-Nor.../dp/B000RZKZPS Last edited by LifeInfusion; Mar 02, 2011 at 05:02 PM // 17:02.. |

Welcome, and I think you might like the sequel Guild Wars 2 when it's released (still unknown when that will be, but speculation is that it will be by the first quarter of 2012 or so). I've only been playing since last summer, but I too bought the Trilogy and EotN and am enjoying the series. The wiki has a lot of helpful information and can be accessed at any time while playing the game by means of a menu on the left side of the screen.
Mesmers are interesting to play and have arguably some of the best "armor" in the game, in terms of style. (Though some of the female Mesmer and Elementalist clothes are a little . . . questionable. As in impractical, and lingerie. At least the armor for most of the professions isn't as bad as a lot of fantasy armor out there.) Anyway, good luck. I'll echo the suggestion to look in our Guild Recruiting forums. That will be the best place to research and get to know guilds and their goals before you dive in.
Your guild will be very helpful to you, but the wikis should always be close at hand. Official Wiki (can also be accessed in game by pressing F10, or by typing in the chat box: /wiki followed by your search term ) Unofficial Wiki (sometimes has different info/perspectives than the official one; the armor galleries are better) Be fearless! There's very little you can "screw up" in this game. Outside your character's primary profession, practically everything else can be changed (though makeovers and name-changes cost real world $) -- secondaries can be switched once your character reaches a certain point in the game, skills and attributes can be switched around in any outpost, and different campaigns can be experienced by any of your characters once they reach a port city. So feel free to have fun and explore. Once you get to know the game, you can investigate the more intricate stuff like Survivor or Legendary Defender of Ascalon if you like. Welcome to Guild Wars! |

Welcome.
Hope you and your gf locate a good guild. A mix of veterans and newbies is the best in your case. Just having someone go with you on missions who know both main object and bonus is hugely helpful. I highly suggest your gf reads the mesmer guide/tutorial in The Campfire (PVE builds and discussion). Mesmers rock and are staple classes in many team builds, but they're hard to play *effectively*. I've been playing for 3 years, finally started a mesmer and I'm still trying to figure her out. Timing is everything. That said, have fun! I sometimes wish I could be new again experiencing everything for the first time. Take it slow, don't rush and just enjoy. |

You can alway jump from guild to guild till you find one you like.
There are a handfull of major cities that people are always trading in and you will have no trouble spotting them once you start playing. Just hit 'P' when in a town to bring up the search window and you can see what people are selling (WTS) or buying(WTB) as well as those looking for people to do missions and quests with. It is also a quick way of adding Hero's (if you have any unlocked) or hench to your party. You'll find that even vetern players like to roll new characters every now and then so finding somebody doing the same quest/mission as you shouldn't be that difficult. If you have any questions Guru is a great place for answers. Feel free to add me to your friends list and whisper me if you have any questions. Crom The Pale |

Ditto on what Star Jewel said - have fun! Don't worry too much about the perfect class, or what skills to use, or builds. Just try things out. I made some crazy decisions early on, but I had fun with them.
There is room for learning curve in every class, don't be afraid to throw yourself at any of them. It's a great way to just enjoy the game and see what it feels like. I didn't use any guides or extra information until I got a little bit in, and it really gave me the chance to have that sense of discovery as I set out on the journey. There was a sense of wonder when I started, to be dropped out here with my green haired necromancer, and got to find new locations, get new skills, and I took a ton of screenshots! In the original Guild Wars (Prophecies), there's lots of ramp up time, lots to discover, and you get skill rewards from quests (which can be huge). If you're starting there, don't worry about buying skills, playing will get you enough to try things out without making you broke. |

Don't get hung up on a single character. You have 8 slots (and you can buy more). That gives you space to try most primary professions. In fact many people advice you should start a char in each chapter and work your way up the stories in parallel.
Avoid deleting characters. You can change everything about them other than primary profession. I've seen lots of people regreting they deleted a character on a whim. Even if you completely hate them, let them be as long as you're not badly in need of an extra slot. Many times players have a change of heart down the road and then they wish they still had that old char. Don't miss out of the RPG part of MMORPG. The game lore and details are extremely rich. Treasure every little corner of the world you reach, talk to NPCs, listen to them talk to each other (sometimes quests pop up this way), take secondary quests in all outposts you reach. They are designed to give you a deeper understanding of the setting, to get you emotionally involved in the story (not to mention benefits in items, gold, experience, skills and getting to see new parts of the world). Befriend other people in the game. Join them for random quests or missions, join in (or initiate) local outpost chat, dabble in trade. In other words don't miss out on the MMO part of MMORPG. Play the game together, it's 10 times the fun when you do it with a friend. Try not to let one of you advance too much in the same chapter, if the difference becomes too great it's too easy for one of you or the other feels like just being there for the ride instead of pulling their weight. Do whatever feels like maximum fun at the time for YOU. Yes, even completely brain-dead stupid stuff. The fun way >>> the "smart" way. GW is all about your own way, don't let anybody tell you different, not players, not the game itself. You don't "have" to do anything in particular or in any particular order, just have fun. Don't be afraid of failure, it's your best teacher. You get knocked down, you get up, try again, try a different approach. It's part of the game, there's a learning curve, don't expect to "win" overnight (what would be the fun in that). In this spirit, avoid being gifted large sums of gold, max armor or weapons for free; try to earn them yourself. There's nothing like the satisfaction you get from putting together all the gold you scraped up bit by bit just to buy one piece of that fancy armor you're craving for, and knowing you earned every penny. (And by earned I don't mean mindless boring grind, I mean doing actually challenging and interesting stuff.) The best buds you can hope to find in the game are those that understand the personal aspect of the game. They will be there for you, offer advice if you ask for it, but let you play the game your own way, let you advance at your own pace, NOT shower you with outrageous gifts, not hung up on "achievements" or on proving anything. Don't let rude or obnoxious players bring you down. Enough advice, go play the game. |

Thanks, Urc,
that was a very thoughtful post, as all of these have been. It really is a relief to know there are awesome people playing this game. I've dealt with so many "jerks" in other games, and I never understand the online, nerdboy jerk mentality. Seems like many in GW are thoughtful and considerate. so, this shall be fun! |
